Deepavali decorations at shopping malls reflect charms of Indian culture
THE magnificent peacock takes centre stage this time of the year as shopping malls around the Klang Valley get ready to welcome the festival of lights, Deepavali.
Many of the malls are colourful, with lights and flowers all centred around the ever-popular peacock design.
Apart from being the national bird of India, in Hinduism, the peacock is considered as a vahana or vehicle of Lord Muruga.
Most of the malls have opted for the peacock kolam, a design that has always been a favourite.
The kolam is a form of art designed using either rice flour, rice or sago. It is usually drawn at the entrance of Hindu homes to welcome the Hindu goddess of fortune, Lakshmi.

The traditional rice flour kolam uses simpler designs while the rice grain kolam, or better known as the Rangoli kolam, is more elaborate with bright hues that are designed to capture attention.
This year, Sunway Pyramid is featuring the Majestic Kolam, the first floating musical kolam in Malaysia with a mixture of music and lights.
Located at Sunway Pyramid’s Water Feature Area, Ground Floor until Nov 5, the kolam is a perfect combination of traditional and contemporary art.
“Even more unique, it also brings out the charms of Indian culture, as the lights flashing on the floating kolam ‘dances’ to the joyous music while creating a very warm and atmospheric festival,” said Sunway Pyramid general manager of marketing Phang Sau Lian.
The mall will also be giving away free candies daily until Nov 15. Shoppers simply have to wish Happy Deepavali in Tamil (Diwali Naal Valthukal) to the staff on duty at the main concierge counter located on the Ground Floor to get the candies.
At Mid Valley Megamall, the mall’s entrances will be decorated with three vibrant coloured kolam, complemented with lights and surrounded by colourful garlands to welcome shoppers into the premises.

“The kolam located at the West Lobby incorporates natural bright coloured motifs such as flowers and leaves to symbolise happiness, peace and fortune,” said assistant public relations manager Stephanie Tan.
“Over at the South Island entrance, the lotus petal design in the centre of the kolam is a sign of welcome for the Hindu deities. The lotus is the flower of the Hindu religion, signifying prosperity and joys of life, while the kolam located at the North Island entrance is inspired by traditional geometric design and in combination with the coconut oil lamp, represents success and prosperity,” she said.
Meanwhile, Pavilion KL has opted for a more contemporary design with four kolam featuring a fusion of fashion style, luxurious scents, delectable sweets and fragrant spices.
Themed “Shine a Light on Style”, the kolam on display comprise the Fashionable Chic Kolam decorated with buttons and beads and is a bold expression of fashion, intricacy and elegance while the Sensuous Ambrosia Kolam adorned with scented candles, infuses luxurious scents from Diptyque.
The Spice and Style Kolam is made up of a variety of spices, a core ingredient in every Indian dish; and the Delectable Sweets Kolam features an array of colourful candies from Sticky, reminding all to embrace the positive, bright and colourful things in life this Deepavali.
The four kolam will be located at the various precincts of the mall, promising visitors a cultural treat as they shop this festive season.

Instead of elaborate kolam designs, Berjaya Times Square Kuala Lumpur has instead chosen to embrace the symbolic peacock.
From now until Nov 3, shoppers will be welcomed into the mall by two majestic peacocks flanked by colourful lamps at the main entrance.
The specially commissioned peacocks stand tall at 10 feet and are meticulously crafted and dressed in vibrant colours.
Playing with hues and tones this season, purple remains the colour of choice as its royal tone radiates love and warmth to all who walk through the doors of Berjaya Times Square.
Another favourite colour that is used to signify happiness and peace is yellow, where it is brightly brushed all over the decoration. The colours red and blue signify good luck, wealth, peace, sincerity and happiness to all shoppers.
At Subang Parade Shopping Centre, beautifully-arranged flower garlands complement the mini peacock garden where shutterbugs can indulge in photo opportunities during their visit.
“This year’s Deepavali creative expression is derived from the beauty that nature has to offer; flowers and colours that can brighten up anyone’s day; the peacock – its feathers symbolising beauty and knowledge – leaves beholders in awe of its beauty and majesty,” said complex senior general manager Nik Azlan Nik Aman.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Festival City is also celebrating the festival with the peacock as the central theme to its decorations.
At the lobby, a pair of bright blue peacocks stand in a little garden.
One peacock stands tall atop a mini “hill” symbolising victory, as in the story of Rama triumphing over Ravana.
The 2.5 feet peacocks with four-foot long colourful tails, have been created out of bright flowers.
