Publisher of children's magazine in 103 languages including Angika battles cancer

CUTTACK: Bijay Mohapatra, the publisher who achieved the rare distinction of publishing a children`s magazine called " Suna Bhauni" in over a 100 languages, is now struggling for his life. The 42-year-old is suffering from renal cancer and undergoing treatment at the Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre. The disease has spread to his abdomen and he is believed to be in a critical condition.

Mohapatra struggled all his life to popularize Indian languages among children by publishing the magazine in 103 languages, including the lesser known Ho, Angika and Bajika, without any financial help from the government. His hard work paid off in the form of several awards and a mention in the Limca Book of Records.

Lying in bed, the frail publisher said, "I saw many bad days in my life but poverty never deterred me from publishing the magazine. However, my health is not allowing me to work any more. I had aspired to unite Indiaby publishing the magazine in 500 Indian languages, but the disease is checkmating that dream."

Mohapatra had sold all his property and put all his earnings into the magazine. Today, his family has no money to meet his medical expenditure. His wife Bijaylaxmi is waiting for some Good Samaritan to come along their way and bail them out in this difficult time.

"My husband dedicated his life and spent all his money in publishing the magazine, but he got nothing in return. In the past two days we have already spent Rs 30,000. The doctors say we need Rs 1 lakh more. I appeal to everyone to help us," said Bijaylaxmi.

"The rectum cancer has spread to the abdomen and his condition is critical. Initially we had planned to conduct a surgery but looking at his poor condition we dropped the idea. He is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation sessions now," said P K Das of AHRCC.
